Bravery Was Coloured Bronze at Winter Olympics 2010 - Part 1

February 2010 and the Winter Olympic games are in full swing in Vancouver, Canada.

Over 80 gold medals were won in total, but I think 3 bronze medalists summed up the bravery needed to get a medal, and the first one is Anja Paerson.

Paerson is a much medalled skier from Sweden, well known for her 'race face' and determination to win.

In the charged atmosphere of the women's downhill, she lost control at a crucial moment, and found herself coming off an uprise and flying 60 metres before crashing on her front.

It was a genuinely nasty crash, in full view of the crowd at the finish area. Amazingly she tried to pick herself up but could be seen wincing in pain. Ok, we all thought that was her Olympics over, but pleased that she looked in not bad shape.

The next day though, there she was on the start line for the Super Combined!

If that was not enough, she went on to take the bronze medal.

That's impressive. She knew how lucky she was to get away with the crash the day before, and no-one would have been surprised for her not to compete. But that's the bravery of the alpine skier, they know every time they leave the start gate that they may not get to the finish.

Let's not forget that this bravery is shown by the gold medalist too, and the silver, and every racer that came down, but to do that after the crash she had means that for me, bravery was coloured bronze!

In the next article I'll be covering another bronze medalist who showed genuine courage at the games.

Thai Sport - Muay Thai

The most well known sport in Thailand is the Thai boxing or Muay Thai. It is a sport which needs a lot of strength, stamina and adaptability. It has a spiritual element too which is normally not linked with sports.

It is a form of combat between two fighters. Records show that this sport existed as early 1411, but it is possible that Muay Thai was in existence even before that. In 1920, Muay Thai was banned as it had become extremely violent and dangerous for the fighters. However, in 1937, the sport was revived and the fighters had to wear protective gear as the new rules and regulations that were laid down.

The spiritual aspect in Muay Thai can be seen before the sport starts. The fighters kneel down to pray to their wai kru or teacher before the event begins and they also perform a dance which is a bit of warm up besides being a ritual. This dance form is called Ram Muay. Ram Muay differs according to individual training camps. The dance is accompanied by music played by the band. The music is also known as phipat music.

The participant wears a tennis racket-like hoop on the head during the dance ceremony and then the coach removes it to indicate the start of the fight. Fighters wear bands containing a Buddha amulet and / or some kind of herb to bring good luck to them.

The actual boxing has five rounds and each round is for 3 minutes. There are three judges, who are seated in three different boxes on three different sides of the boxing ring. Points are given for each punch that lands on the opponent. In between the rounds, fighters can rest. Trainers use the rest as an opportunity to soak the fighters with water and advice them.

Muay Thai is considered to be a difficult sport and requires the fighters to be in peak physical condition.

Team USA Shoots For Gold!

After being held to only two goals scored on 44 shots against Switzerland and one of the two being an empty netter the American's bombard Finland in the first connecting six times on thirteen shots.

The Relentless American attack in the first proved to be their top 15 minutes of the tournament. After their fourth straight tally Finland goalie Miikka Kiprusoff pulled himself from the game and Niklas Backstrum came in to relieve him. The results would be the same as Team USA Men's Ice Hockey squad would light the lamp two more times right off the bat.

The first goal of the game would be off a Finland misread as Miikka Kiprusoff would leave his crease to play a puck at the top of the circle their defenseman skated away from the puck. The on coming full speed ahead Phil Kessel made Kiprusoff make a bad decision with the puck that landed on Ryan Malone's stick as he fired into the empty net for a 1-0 US lead.

From their on Kiprusoff seamed rattled as Parise, Johnson and Kane would score. Kane would welcome Niklas Backstrom into the game scoring again only 2:23 later and Paul Stastny would do the same after another 15 tics for the whopping 6-0 lead.

Miller continues to be on his game! After putting all his 18 shots he faced aside US coach Ron Wilson gave his wall a break and let Bruins goal keep get some action. Tim Thomas would get his first action of the tournament and would allow one goal on seven shots. The lone Finland goal came off a shot that deflected off of a defesneman's skate and broke the US shut out streak with only 5:14 left on the clock.

Team USA has not trailed in this tournament and this team has only gotten better since their lone practice before the games started. A great group of guys that are playing for each other and not for themselves team USA captain Jamie Langenbrunner stated. Also stating that this team believed in themselves as no one else did.

It's Canada vs the United States for Gold on Sunday! A rematch of the 2002 Olympics where Canada would win on American soil. What a great way to finish off this Olympic run would be for the Americans to do the same on Canadian grounds.

Thailand - Why I Live There

After my first night out in Pattaya, Thailand, when I met a woman on a blind date organized by one of my best friends, I sat up in bed and I recalled the details of the night before. We had started in The Pig and Whistle, where I was staying on Soi 7. The Pig is a lovely, quiet, serene, air-conditioned oasis of tranquility in a street, which is one of the liveliest, noisiest and busiest streets in Pattaya.

We went outside into the soi and into a torrent of people not unlike that of a queue heading for a football game, except that all the females were dressed in bikinis. We had called into one of those outdoor bars, where my friend had a surprise waiting for me. His girlfriend of a time, whom I knew nothing about and a friend of hers who wanted to meet up with me. The four of us had dallied there an hour before walking the thirty metres to Beach Road. The traffic is one-way on Beach Road, so we took a Baht Taxi North going with the flow and got off two or three kilometres further on just before Walking Street, which is the most well-known street in Pattaya.

We had gone into a complex of bars and sat at one at random. It was only then that I realized that the bars were all set out surrounding a Muay Thai boxing ring, where the fighting was continuous and free, although foreigners are expected to donate a prize to the winner of each bout; 20-100 Baht suffices.

We stayed there an hour and moved on to Walking Street to eat. We ate in a seafood specialist restaurant which has a pier or jetty as its dining area. The food was incredible and the mood was romantic with the moon reflecting on the sea and the atmospheric lighting.

I don't believe I had had a chance in reality, I fell for my gorgeous date that night and I saw her every day for the rest of my 30 days holiday. We had a magnificent time and when I had to go, I resolved to find out if I could live in Thailand. I went home and worked out, that if I was careful and a few things went in my favour, I would most likely afford to live there for ten years.

Six weeks later, I returned to Thailand and Joy was waiting for me at the airport. Nothing had altered between us and we caught a bus to visit her family in northern Thailand. We slept in a room that her brother had given up for us and everyone made me feel very welcome. Joy's family live in a traditional teak house built on stilts and everybody lived and slept in one room in the traditional way, with the exception of Joy's brother, who had built an extension, because he was hoping to get married soon.

I love that village and still live there now, five years later. Joy and I are married and have our own house - a traditional, European, concrete-block bungalow not five metres from Joy's mum, who is a wonderful mother-in-law. Her family seem to understand what a big step it was for me to come here alone and are determined to be there for me, if I need assistance, like my own family in Britain would be. The mission at hand is learning Thai as no one else in the village, besides my wife, speaks English.

How to Make an African Safari For Children Enjoyable

You and your spouse love to travel. However, since you had your children, you have been too busy raising them to do as much traveling as you once did. Now that the children are a bit older, you have decided that the next summer vacation should include an African safari. There are several ways that you can make it enjoyable.

About African Safaris for Children

The first thing that you need to consider before you plan the trip for your children is the shots that each of you will need before you get to Africa. These shots include inoculations against such things as malaria, which can be caught from bug bites.

Although it might seem to your children that this might not be a good idea, it is your job to convince them that this African safari for children is indeed a good idea. You should begin by discussing all of the animals you might see.

Children often love books that include exotic animals such as cheetahs and the rhinoceros. They will most likely become much more excited if they realize that they can often see these animals on an African safari for children.

Children love to play games, and so this is a great opportunity for you to get them excited! Have the children make a list of all the animals they would like to see. Next, have them find picture of each animal. You can make their lists into little booklets, so that while they are on the safari they can identify their favorite animals. You can save their booklets to include in a scrapbook.

The most important thing on this trip, as well as any trip, is safety. You should be sure that the safari you have chosen is not as adventurous as an adult safari would be. Thus, it is important to consult with a travel agent to make sure that it only includes a very minimal element of risk.

Be sure that you book well in advance of when you plan to go, because they can be very popular and you might not be able to find accommodations sooner. Also, when it comes to the price, depending on the package that you choose, it should be noted that such trips can be expensive.

For more information on safari trips for children, consult various travel magazines or search the internet. With the proper research, you are sure to find one that is both enjoyable and safe.

St. Albert Chosen As Venue For 2012 Special Olympics Winter Games

St. Albert is set to be the host of the 2012 Winter Special Olympics. The organization, which organizes a winter event every four years, is in the process of preparing for its seventh event. In a written statement, St. Albert Mayor Nolan Crouse commented that he is thrilled the city has been chosen for the prestigious event after having hosted the 2009 Alberta Summer Games for disabled athletes.

The event, to encompass all Canadian provinces as well as the Northwest and Yukon territories, is expected to draw at least 700 participants, coaches and staff. The 2009 Summer Games included some 850 competitors and personnel. Sports in the venue will include cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, figure skating, floor hockey, speed-skating, snowshoeing and curling.

With a bid program that began last June, St. Albert competed with Edmonton, as well as a conglomerate directed by Leduc including Devon, Wetaskiwin and Beaumont. The potential locations were evaluated by a Special Olympics review group consisting of staff as well as volunteers. Special Olympics Alberta Board Chair John Pinsent remarked that all of the communities would have been entirely suitable to host the games.

The Winter Games are a joint venture between Special Olympics Canada, Special Olympics Alberta, St. Albert and the event that qualifies athletes to be part of the World Winter Games team in 2013. This will be a nice boost to the local economy and draw attention to the St Albert area in a very positive light. It will be interesting to see how the local community reacts to such a big event taking place.

Learn Beginners Spanish With CDs

If you've decided to learn to speak Spanish, you might be confused by the dizzying array of Spanish course options available to you. There are many ways that you can learn beginner's Spanish, but I here is why I think using a learn Spanish CD program is the way to go.

Even though some websites claim they will teach you Spanish for free, I recommend you purchase your materials. You usually get what you pay for (more or less). Free online Spanish lessons will be incomplete, so don't expect to learn that much.

On the other hand, there's no reason to spend any more than you have to, either. And learn Spanish audio CDs or digital downloads are the least expensive ways to learn a language. Hiring a personal Spanish tutor is very expensive. Some of the best programs will give you access to a "virtual teacher", which is the next best thing. You can ask the instructor questions or join their forum to network with other students.

When you use your Spanish CDs, you can study and learn at your own pace. You can study whenever you want, any time or night or day. You don't have to conform to a teacher's schedule or waste time commuting to lessons.

You can study wherever you want, too. You can listen to Spanish CDs or download audio files to your iPod and listen any time. I like that you can multitask with audio files or CDs. You can learn while driving a car, fixing dinner, or working out!

The best language software programs also contain CD-ROM's or access to a website where you can watch videos and see visual demonstrations of the Spanish words that are being taught. Some will offer stories, games, quizzes, and more forms of interactive visual learning that makes learning Spanish fun and easy. Some of us can learn purely with audio, but most people learn best with a combination of audio and visual.

When you are ready to purchase a Spanish course, here are some things to keep in mind before you buy. You should expect to spend between $100 and $200 to get a good Spanish CD program that will give you a good foundation to learning conversational Spanish. You should also look for a program that has an unconditional money back guarantee.

There are many learn Spanish sites where a free lesson is offered. Why not sign up for it before you buy. It will give you a general idea of that program's teaching style and what the teacher is like. If you find the audio quality is poor or you can't understand the teacher, I'd suggest you pass on that Spanish course and try another.

Want to learn to speak Spanish? At SpanishLessons101.com we give you unbiased, honest reports on the best, most popular online and audio Spanish courses that making learning Spanish fun and easy. You can find the perfect "learn Spanish" program for you...and some great articles, too...Just check out SpanishLessons101.com.

Condos In Everett Washington

There are condos for sale all over the United States. Their prices vary as much as their locations (from inexpensive to very expensive). Some people use condos for vacations, while others live in their condo year round. In many cases you have to do less yard work than living in a home. You don't have neighbors surrounding you, like an apartment. You will probably have to pay a homeowners' association fee, which you wouldn't have to in some apartments, or if you had your own home (depending on where your home is located). Condos are also a great investment idea because they are popular as vacation rentals.

Homeowners' Association:
Living in a condominium is a great idea if you are sick of yard work. This is because condos have little or no yards, and the small amount of yard you do have will be taken care of by someone from the homeowners' association. If you are looking at condos for sale, you should realize that if your condo is in a neighborhood of condos, that you will probably be required to belong to a homeowners association. The homeowners' association pays the person who keeps up all of the yards. They also fix anything that goes wrong with your condo, including electrical, sewage, heating, and other problems. While all of that is great, you do have to pay a monthly homeowners association fee, which is probably not less than $100. If you run into problems with your homeowners' association, there are lawyers that specialize in condominium litigation.

Your neighborhood:
Some condos are located next to golf courses. Others have swimming pools, weight training facilities, miniature golf, recreation centers, and game rooms. The accessories that come with the condo may determine the age of people that live in the neighborhood. If you are interested in being around people that are your age, simply ask the manager of the condos what age the people who live in the neighborhood are.

Benefits of staying in a condo on your vacation:
While there are many condos for sale, there are also condos for rent. Since many people use their condo as a second home, or vacation home, there are condos in great vacation spots that can be rented for a week or longer. Renting a condo has some benefits that a hotel doesn't: condos come with a kitchen, washer and dryer, and more space than a hotel room.

Renting out a condo:
After you have purchased your own condo, you may want to look for other condos for sale in the area, purchase them, and rent them out. This is one good way you can invest your money. Sometimes condos are attached, forming a duplex. You may purchase the duplex condo, and rent out half of it. If your condo is in a vacation area, you can choose to rent it out week-by-week, or you can rent it out permanently.

One thing to remember if you rent out a property: you may have to pay an income tax. You will also have to pay property tax, and for someone to clean out the condo after each renter, unless you choose to do it yourself. Figure this into any amount that you charge for rent.

2010 Winter Games Vancouver - Whistler Accommodations - Vacation Homes Condos Cabins

Renting a home for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver or Whistler?

The Winter Olympic Games like the Summer Olympic Games are held once every four years. The last Winter Olympic Games were held Torino in Italy in 2006. On July 3rd 2003, the Canadian city of Vancouver was awarded the Winter Olympic Games and subsequently the mayor of Vancouver, Sam Sullivan received the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony of the Torino games. This flag is currently on display at the Vancouver City Hall where it will remain until the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. These Winter Olympic Games which will be known as the XXI Olympic Winter Games or the 21st Winter Olympics will be held in Vancouver and its nearby resort city of Whistler, British Columbia between February 12th and 28th 2010. After the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Vancouver will also host the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games from the 12th to the 21st of March 2010.

Vancouver Rentals -an ideal location

Vancouver which is often ranked as one of the top cities in the world to live in is known for its beautiful natural scenery, temperate climate, cleanliness and vibrant multi-cultural society. Vancouver's International Airport which is located in Metro Vancouver has direct air links with various major cities around the globe as well as several other Canadian cities. This makes getting to Vancouver relatively easy for participants and spectators. Moreover the resort city of Whistler which is co-hosting the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and is located just 125 km away from Vancouver  is renowned for its excellent winter sports and various other recreational facilities.

Preparing for the Games

Both the host cities of Vancouver and Whistler have been undergoing intense preparations for the games in the form of creation of new sporting, transport and infrastructural facilities in order to welcome the many participants, officials, members of the international media and spectators who will be traveling to Vancouver  for the games. It is estimated that 5500 athletes and officials from more than eighty participating nations will be attending the Winter Olympic Games while 1350 athletes and officials from over forty nations will attend the Paralympics Games. In addition to these athletes and officials, more than 10,000 media personnel from various national and international agencies will also come to Vancouver to cover the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Both the Winter Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games are being organized by Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC).

Participating Countries

The National Olympic Committees of more than 80 nations will field teams for the 2010 Winter Games.  Nations need to qualify at least one athlete or team to be a participant in the games. The list of participating counties includes countries that have a long tradition of winter sports like Austria, Norway, Denmark, USA and Great Britain and also several others countries like Kenya and Thailand who are not usually known for their winter sports exploits. In fact, the games will feature many firsts like the first time participation of the Western African nation of Ghana. The debutant Ghanaian team will feature 34 year old Ghanian skier Kwame Nkrumah - Acheampong who is known as 'Snow Leopard' and who will be competing in the slalom and giant slalom skiing events. Similarly the team of the Islamic Republic of Iran will for the first time field a women skier at the 2010 Winter Games.

Sporting Events

The 2010 Winter Olympic Games will feature eighty six medal events in 15 sporting disciplines. These sports include Skiing (alpine skiing, cross country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined, freestyle skiing, and snowboard), Skating (speed skating, figure skating, and short track speed skating), Bobsleigh (bobsleigh and skeleton), Luge, Biathlon, Ice Hockey, and Curling. The Paralympic Winter Games will feature five sports Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Biathlon, Ice Sledge Hockey, and Wheelchair Curling.. Approximately 1.6 million tickets have been issued for the various events of the 2010 Winter Games. These tickets have been available in staggered sales since October 2008.

Many of the 2010 Winter Games venues are located in downtown Vancouver and  include the Canada Hockey Place (Ice hockey), Vancouver Olympic Center, (Curling and Wheel chair Curling)the Pacific Coliseum( Figure Skating)  and the UBC Thunderbird Arena( Ice Hockey and ice sledge hockey). Additionally the Richmond Olympic Oval which is located on the banks of the Fraser River will host all the speed skating events while Cypress Mountain located in West Vancouver will be the location for many of the skiing events. Venues in Whistler include the Whistler Sliding Centre, Whistler Creekside and the Whistler Olympic Park.

Non Competitive events

Apart from these sporting venues, the games will also feature several non competition venues like the BC Place Stadium located in downtown Vancouver which will be the location for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and the Opening Ceremony for the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. This 55,000 seat stadium which features the largest air-supported stadium roof in North America will also be the site for the nightly Victory Ceremonies presentations which will be held before a live audience of 35,000 people. Medals won in Whistler will be awarded nightly at the Whistler Olympic Celebration Plaza with about 8000 people in attendance.

This is the first time in the Olympic Games history that the Opening and Closing ceremonies will be staged in an enclosed venue which will afford the participants, performers and spectators protection from the elements. The hosting of the ceremonies in an indoor venue will also help the organizers in conceptualizing, creating and hosting a spectacular show which is rumored to feature state of the art lighting, projection, sound and special effects as well as all kinds of performers, dancers and athletes who will showcase the vibrant history and culture of Canada.

Excellent Public Transport system

The Games venues can be easily accessed by Vancouver's excellent public transportation system which consists of public buses, Sky Train (light train), Sea Bus(passenger ferry) and the West Coast Express( rail service). The Canada Line, a new rapid rail service linking the Vancouver waterfront to Richmond and Vancouver International Airport will also become functional in mid- 2009 well in time for the games.  Additionally the Olympic Bus Network will provide access to the games venues located in Whistler. Further Vancouver's public transport network is disabled friendly as well. VANOC wants the Games to be environmentally sustainable and are encouraging spectators to only make use of Vancouver's excellent public transport to gain access to the many events of the Games.

2010 Accommodations :: Vancouver Rental Homes for the Olympic games

Along with the various sports and infrastructural facilities, VANOC is also involved in creating accommodation facilities for the many athletes, officials and accredited media personnel for the 2010 Winter Games. While the athletes will be housed at the newly constructed Olympic Villages in downtown Vancouver and in the scenic Cheakamus Valley in Whistler, VANOC has also negotiated with local hotels to provide rooms for 20,000 officials, media personnel and sponsors under a contract that it has with the IOC. As a result of which there is currently a room block in place for many Vancouver  hotels and hotel inventory will only become available closer to the Games.

If you have been lucky enough to score a ticket for one of the many events of the 2010 Winter Games, you might want to make accommodation plans for the Games at the earliest so as to avoid paying astronomical rates closer to Games. Apart from hotels, a variety of nontraditional accommodation options are also available to you both in Vancouver and Whistler like B&Bs, cruise ships and the increasing popular home rentals. In fact many Vancouver homeowners are looking to cash in on the Olympics by offering their homes for rent during the Games. These rental homes are being advertised on various vacation rental websites. A search in Yahoo using the search phrase Vancouver Rental Homes will point you in the right direction.

How much will it cost you to rent a vacation rental for the 2010 Winter Games?

A quick examination of these classifieds and websites reveal that vacation home rentals for the 2010 Winter Games have an average nightly asking rate of $1000. These rates further vary according the size of the home being offered and the proximity of the home to the Games. One bedroom homes in Vancouver currently have an asking rate that range from approximately $464 upwards per night while homes with more than four bedrooms have an asking rate of approximately $1,500 upwards per night.  In Whistler, the asking rates for rental homes is higher as in certain areas  there is a shortage of supply and here rates are as high as $484 per bedroom night.

In addition to these steep rates, most renters also expect you to put down a steep damage deposit as a part of your rental agreement. This damage deposit can range from $1000 to an astronomical $3000 per week. Though this deposit is refundable it significantly adds to the cost of your accommodation at the 2010 Winter Games.

If however you want to avoid these steep charges and want to book your vacation rental from a well established trusted source you might want to have a look at the rental homes being offered for the 2010 Winter Games by regarded,  highly ranked and TRUSTED vacation rental websites.

Bill Board Websites jammed and over crowded with homes will lead to a ton of frustration for 2010 Vancouver Whistler accommodations.

Vacation home rental websites also offers a wide variety of vacation rentals but there are websites where the owners and the renters are authenticated unlike other channels who offer homes which are not attested or verified. This increases the transparency of the rental process as both the owner and the renter are assured that they are entering a genuine agreement. When using one of the many billboard site it is up to the renter to investigate the home, owner, amenities and location of that particular home. This requires lots of time and effort but worth it so travelers do not show up to a vacant lot. There are a couple TRUSTED SITES for 2010 Winter game rentals that take the investigation to the next level by using a Vancouver law office to facilitate the rental contract for you and verify the home and true owner exist. - For first time travelers spending lots of money on accommodations this is something to seriously consider.

How does the rental process at one of the better Vacation Home Websites work? Having decided on a rental, the renter then pays the rental fees into a trust account that is maintained by a law office retained by the company. The rental fees are then held in this account to be dispersed to the owner only after the renter has vacated the premises. This process ensures that you are not sending your rental money to an unknown unverified entity that can misuse the funds and scam you out of your money. The process also aids the owner who is comforted by the fact that he will be paid for the lease of his property and will not be subject to payment frauds which are quite common with rental agreements that are finalized on the Internet. The rental process also doesn't require you to plunk down a hefty damage deposit for your rental; instead all renters have to purchase a $39 insurance plan which covers home owners up to $3000. This rental process instituted by  safeguards the interests of both the renters and the homeowners. The process is transparent, trusted and relatively inexpensive as well.

Owners should look for websites that are actively spending money advertising their homes to renters.

The bottom line here is that if you are just one of hundreds of homes on a website for 2010Rentals and the site in not being promoted with Facebook, Google, Yahoo, AdWords etc...  in Countries beyond BC look elsewhere!!
