Getting to Phuket, Thailand

Phuket is one of the more popular travel destinations within Southeast Asia due to its gorgeous beaches, scrumptious food, great shopping, exciting nightlife and the countless recreational opportunities it offers to people of all backgrounds. It is located in the South of Thailand and is in fact Thailand's largest island. Generally, people reach Phuket by air, bus or ferry.

By Air - The main airport is Phuket International Airport, which is also one of Thailand's busiest airports. There are direct international flights from Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Macao and Seoul. During peak periods, there are also direct charters from Europe and Australia. If you are from other parts of Thailand, such as Bangkok, Chiangmai, Pattaya and Ko Samui, there are also low-cost domestic carriers that can bring you to Phuket. The main airlines that the airport caters to are Thai Airways, Silk Air and Malaysian Airlines. There are also a number of budget carriers that flight here, such as Thai AirAsia, Tiger Airways, Firefly and Nok Air. Once you have gotten past baggage clearance, you can choose to take the limousine taxis, metered taxis or minibus services to get to your intended destination. There are also airport shuttles which run every half an hour or so. These shuttles will drop you off at Phuket Town bus station where you can hop onto local buses that will take you to all the major beaches in Phuket.

By Bus - If you are on mainland Thailand in places such as Bangkok, Hat Yai or Krabi, you can reach Phuket by bus. Be sure to buy tickets from trustworthy bus companies as there are some bus companies with reputations for overcharging, theft and overall bad service. In general, buses will drop you off at the BKS terminal which is on Thanon Phang Na in Phuket Town. From here, you can take a taxi or bus to your location. You can even hop onto a local contraption called tuk-tuk which is a cheap and fast way to travel in Thailand.

By Ferry - If you are from Ko Phi Phi, Krabi, Ko Racha or the Similan Islands, you may want to consider taking the ferry service to Phuket. Such ferry services run twice a day for about two hours. They make for very pleasant rides but the journey can be somewhat turbulent if there is a storm. There are also several cruises that take their passengers to Phuket.

Mae Sariang - An Overlooked Tourist Destination in Mae Hong Song, Northern Thailand

Mae Sariang is a very small town with a population of just 50,000. As a tourist destination it often gets overlooked, its true there are very few recreational or entertainment facilities in town but what it lacks in entertainment it makes up for in authenticity, tradition and culture. Once an important trading town with Burma in the 1950s many buildings from this era still remain, the town is characterized by old wooden shophouses and ornate Shan temples. A good friend of mine and local in Mae Sariang once told me that going to the temple was so pivotal in Shan culture, that in prior times people could never live somewhere that was further than walking distance to a temple. Which explains why Mae Sariang has so many temples- it is true there's always a temple at arms length

In Mae Sariang it is still possible to see a Shan lady dressed fully in tranditional Shan attire riding her bicycle on her way to the local market or temple. Traditional festivals such as Ork Pansa and Loi Kratong are still huge celebrations here where everyone in the community gets involved. What is nice to see is that the locals are a mix of religions, Buddhism dominates but there are also a large number of Muslims and Christians who all reside peacefully with each other.

For a town on the popular Mae Hong Son Loop tourist route, it has managed to stay under commercialised surprisingly well. One indicator of how developed a town is in Thailand is the number of 7/11s there are. In May 2008 there was a grand total of one 7/11 on the main highway outlying the town, now 20 months later 2 more stores have opened their doors, this may be just the start of more to come.

Part of Mae Sariang's charm is its warmth and accessibility. There are very few places left where people offer you the time and hospitality that the locals here do - a typical trait of Northern Thai culture.
Mae Sariang is a perfect blend of old and new. There are still elements of traditional life and it has all the basic amenities of a modern town - a few ATMs, a post office, hospital, grocery stores. Mae Sariang is not completely in the backwaters, neither is it a busy town. The pace is very slow and relaxed, and it has yet to be caught up in the tide of capitalism of its nearest city Chiang Mai.

Just a few minutes ride out of town will take you to the beauty of the surrounding mountains and countryside which is what makes Mae Sariang a great trekking destination. Those looking for a more non-touristic and authentic trekking experience bypass Chiang Mai and head to Mae Sariang.

As a traveller you won't be bombarded with advertisments for tours and treks as in the more touristy areas, you will have to search a bit harder as everything is under promoted. There are only a few tour agencies in town; Thailand Hilltribe Holidays , Mae Sariang Tours, Salawin Tours and North West Guesthouse also arrange tours. Ideas for trips from Mae Sariang include the Salawin River Boat trip, Mae Ngao National Park, trekking, Karen and Lawa Hilltribe Village homestay. On Langpanich Road which runs alongside the Yuam River there is a strip of guesthouses (Riverhouse, Riverside, Northwest) and Sawadee Restaurant which serves great Thai and western food. Pick a spot at one of these overlooking the river and soak up the sleepiness of the town as the world goes by.

The "Wright" Game For an ESL Class

Mr. Wright is a great party game for ESL classrooms. It is a fun game for Christmas or any other party occasion. You have to supply a small gift...probably several since your students will want to play more than one game. You should have several scripts available.

Here's how it works...

Students stand in a circle facing in. If you have a lot of students, I suggest using more than one circle at the same time, though of course that means a gift for each circle. A smaller number of students works better...perhaps 8 to 10 in a circle. Hand the gift to one of them. (A box works well. Use your judgment). Someone... you or a designated speaker - perhaps another teacher, reads the script slowly. Whenever the holder of the gift hears ' WRIGHT', ' WRITE, or RIGHT, he or she passes the gift to the student on their right. If they hear the word 'LEFT', they pass it to the one on their left. When the reader finishes the script, the student holding the gift wins.

Here's a sample script...

Mr. and Mrs. WRIGHT

One Saturday morning, Mr. WRIGHT said to Mrs. WRIGHT, "Why don't we go for a drive in the country."

"That sounds like a RIGHT fine idea, Bill, but RIGHT now I have some cookies in the oven. They have about ten minutes LEFT. Then, we can be RIGHT out the door. Does that sound all RIGHT?"

"How about the kids?"

"Well, Mary is watching TV. There's not much time LEFT in her program so she'll be all RIGHT after that. And Jimmy is RIGHT there. "What are you doing, Jimmy WRIGHT?"

"I'm trying to WRITE an essay for school."

"Well, you can WRITE that later, all RIGHT?"

"All RIGHT, mom!"

Mary called from the living room, "I'll be RIGHT there, too, mom."

Soon, Mr. WRIGHT, Mrs. WRIGHT and their two children, Mary and Jimmy WRIGHT were in the car and ready to go. "All RIGHT, which way should we go? Should we turn LEFT or RIGHT?"

"Let's take a vote!"

"RIGHT! No, I mean, turn LEFT!"

The others all wanted to turn RIGHT so RIGHT they went.

They only got a block away from their house when Mary said, "Oh-no!  I LEFT my phone in my room. Can we go back, please, dad?"

"Oh, all RIGHT", said Mr. WRIGHT.

Mary went RIGHT inside and got the phone she had LEFT. Then, she got RIGHT back in the car; the WRIGHT family got RIGHT back on the road and soon they were RIGHT out in the country. They drove through some small towns...ENWRIGHT, CARTRIGHT and WAINWRIGHT.

"Are we going the RIGHT way, Bill?" asked Mrs. WRIGHT.

"I think so. We turned LEFT at CARTRIGHT; then RIGHT at WAINWRIGHT and that put us RIGHT onto Highway 47. I think if we keep going, we will come to WRIGHTBRIDGE. They have a large Saturday market and a great restaurant RIGHT next to it. We can have a RIGHT good lunch there, all RIGHT?"

Everyone agreed that Mr. WRIGHT had a good plan and so off they went. In WRIGHTBRIDGE, they found a parking spot RIGHT by the market and spent about an hour or so looking around.

"I'm getting hungry," said Jimmy. "RIGHT! Me, too!" echoed Mary. So the WRIGHT family went RIGHT to the "EATRIGHT' Restaurant and had a fabulous lunch.

"How did you know about this restaurant, dad?"

"Well now, it just happens that it's owned by my cousin..LEFTY ."

"LEFTY WRIGHT? What a cool name!"

The WRIGHT family enjoyed the rest of the day in the country. When they got home, Jimmy said, "I still have my essay to WRITE".

Mary said she was going to sit RIGHT down and watch some TV.

Mrs. WRIGHT said, "I'm tired. Think I'll go RIGHT to bed."

"You go RIGHT ahead. I'll be RIGHT there,' said Mr. WRIGHT. He looked at Mary and Jimmy.

"All RIGHT, WRIGHTS. Good night!"

The End!

+++++++++++++++
As you can see, you can make up pretty well anything. The main thing is to have some fun and get your students listening in English, RIGHT?
